Campsites on the Brittany coast, a few of our favorites

Brittany is one of the most popular destinations in France, thanks in part to the beautiful coastline, the lovely beaches and mild climate.

view on the map Because you almost stumble over the campsites in the area (there are more in Brittany than in all of Denmark), I went to see for myself if I could find a few nice places along the coast. Driving from Saint-Malot in the northeast, via Brest in the west, back along the south coast to the Gulf of Morbihan, I have visited quite a few campsites and below are the ones who stood out for me.

A really small site on an authentic Breton farm is Le Cheval Rouge. Most of them are fairly simple and lie on the somewhat rocky north coast. Are you looking for more luxury - a swimming pool, large playground and perhaps a sauna - then have a look at Camping Le Ranolien (four stars, more than five hundred places and lots of opportunity to rent houses), Camping Le Fort Espagnol (4 stars, 190 pitches, a little more inland northeast of Carnac) or Camping Le Moténo (also on the south side of Brittany, southeast of Plouhinec, with four stars and 160 places).

Camping La Vallée ***
pitches: 47

Camping La Vallee is a charming little campsite, hidden among the greenery and the hills near Erquy, about a hundred kilometers west of Le Mont Saint Michel. It is a quiet and beautifully landscaped place, where you will be welcomed by the owner. The pitches are spacious and largely flat. Not all places have a real separation, but that does not detract from the fact that this is a distinctly green campsite in an equally green environment. This creates a pleasant relaxed atmosphere. Due to the hidden location, a little inland, you cannot expect a sea view from your campsite. But the coast is nearby, within walking distance.

Camping Le Cap De Bréhat ****
pitches: 150

A somewhat more luxurious campsite, with a swimming pool, playground and a bouncy castle. But lies very nicely between the hills by the sea and offers what many people are looking for here: sea views. The campsite has a high and low section. The lower part is park-like and sheltered. In a number of places you have a direct view of the sea, but a little more to the rear (the elongated terrain is more or less at right angles to the coastline) you should not count on that too much. The high part has a wider view, but is less green and sheltered. A number of mobile homes are also quite present there. If you want to be on the top, keep in mind that it is always 100 steps up and down to the reception, the pool and the bar. Not really a problem, but if you have less mobility, something to be reckoned with. Nice detail: there are some places for tents where you have a mini house with some amenities at your place: chairs and a barbeque and so on. And if you really want something different: there is also a beautiful tree house for rent.

Camping Du Port ****
pitches: 80

In my view, Camping Du Port is not really a striking site. Everything is fine, certainly, but you see that often. Yet he is on this list and that has to do with one thing: the location right on the water and a whole row of camping places where you can fully enjoy it. Once through the gate you will see about twenty spots on your right that literally border the bay. You roll out your tent in the morning, clamber over a few rocks and you stand in the sea. You can have breakfast on the rocks, if you want. Your children can play in the clear water right in front of your tent. How often do you find that? Not that often, and that's why Du Port is on our list here.

Camping Roz Ar Mor **
pitches: 38

Camping Roz Armor is a small camp site on a slope, run by a friendly lady, where you come for peace and the beautiful view of the Bay of Lannion. There are a few mobile homes, but they are tucked away at the back of the row and don't spoil your view. You can choose from three terraces to place your tent or caravan. You don't have direct access to the sea here; the campsite is slightly higher on the slope. But that is more than offset by the generous greenery and the calm appearance.

Camping Le Kerdual ***
pitches: 26

Just below Roz Armor is Le Kerdual: also a small campsite with a handful of mobile homes, also rich in greenery and overlooking the Bay of Lannion. And the owners are equally friendly. Camping Le Kerdual may be a step ahead because of its own access to the beach; that is certainly if your children do have an advantage. But both are equally charming to me. That beach, by the way, is allowed: a beautiful arch of sand and some stones, oriented to the southwest and sheltered by the surrounding slopes.

Camping Ar Kleguer ****
pitches: 182

If you like camping right by the sea, but also want some luxury, check out Camping Ar Kleguer. The campsite is situated on a protuberant land, directly on the sea, but also offers a playground, a beautifully designed swimming pool and, for example, a "backpacker room" with washing machines and WiFi. There are quite a few mobile homes on one part of the campsite, perhaps you should not stand in your tent there. The area just after the entrance is nicer, where you will find spacious and well-protected places. But if you can, try to get a place in the line along the coast; there you have sun, wind and a beautiful view over the bay of Morlaix. Just behind that row is a kind of lump in the middle of the campsite with a handful of places on it. That is the highest point of the campsite and certainly a special place.

Camping Pen Enez *
pitches: 100

Entirely devoid of luxury is Camping Municipal Penn Enez. But it is still on my list because you can camp here beautifully in the middle of the dune landscape, ideal if you are looking for peace. Many Dutch people do not come there, it is mainly French people who visit this place. The campsite is divided into a handful of large fields where you will have to find shelter behind your own tent or caravan - there are no hedges. Here the wind is in control. You come here because you love it, and because you want to walk along the rough water and through the pristine dunes.

Camping Les Druides ***
pitches: 110

You can safely call Carnac and the surrounding area popular; it is full of tourists here in the summer. And outside it is soon busy. Maybe that's why I didn't find it so easy to find a campsite here that appealed to me. A campsite that offers a good spot in this area is Les Druides. Maybe because they are a little further from the sea (but still within walking distance) they can afford more space. The places are quite spacious and quite green. Large trees give shade to a large number of places. Here too you will find the necessary mobile homes, but try to find a campsite in this area without it. At least they are not disturbing at Les Druides. There is the necessary play area, the sanitary facilities are in order and there is a peaceful atmosphere at the campsite. All in all a place that I think is worth considering in the Carnac area.
